“nostalgia - it’s delicate, but potent. teddy told me that in greek, “nostalgia” literally means “the pain from an old wound.” it’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone. this device isn’t a spaceship, it’s a time machine. it goes backwards, and forwards… it takes us to a place where we ache to go again. it’s not called the wheel, it’s called the carousel. it let’s us travel the way a child travels - around and around, and back home again, to a place where we know are loved.”—don draper, mad men. There’s always talk about just being yourself and not care about what others think of you. Do not put on airs or facades, throw away the pretensions and let the world see who you really are. It makes life a whole lot easier to live and enjoy things as they are.
Sure, that’s true undoubtedly but it’s hard, not because you have to put on airs (well maybe certain circumstances really do call for it..) but generally speaking, an ordinary person is not so ordinary after all.
We behave a certain way with friends and yet another with family. Even then there are subsets that are drawn within them. Immediate family members see a side of you and the extended sees another sometimes.
Barriers are drawn within different groups of friends. The ones closest to you knows the core of your being and what you are made of and the ones who take up the exterior layers see yet another side of you. The quieter, perhaps more introspective side, or the wild crazy party animal. It differs as the group varies.
Yet who’s to say all these different facades aren’t the real you? You could possibly be all these things. The person who enjoys quiet moments thinking about things but also the one that enjoys a drink or two out on the town. The one that would rather sit by the beach just having a brilliant conversation about philosophy or something but also the one that enjoys painting the town red.
Not everyone will see the real you maybe in your entire lifetime, except perhaps the one you fall in love and spend the rest of your life with.
But the point is, there’s more to you that a single solitary characteristic. The reason why you’re unique and different and outstanding is because you’re made of layers. Layers that are worth unraveling.
That’s who you really are, and that’s what’s real. So don’t ever be afraid to show it.
I see your true colors and that’s why I love you so don’t be afraid to let them show your true colors
“I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles.”—Audrey Hepburn (via leesh-writes)
“You know that feeling? That feeling when you just want the right thing to fall into the right place, not only because it’s right, but because it will mean that such a thing is still possible? I want to believe that.”—Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist (via quotewhore)
